Packing Tips

10 Expert Packing Tips for a Stress-Free Move

Moving house can feel overwhelming, but with the right packing strategy you can protect your belongings, save time on moving day and arrive at your new home feeling calm and organised.

1. Start Packing Early — Earlier Than You Think

Most people underestimate how long packing takes. A rule of thumb in the removal industry is to start at least 4–6 weeks before your move date. Begin with rooms you use least — spare bedrooms, loft storage, garage items — and work your way towards the rooms you use every day. Leave the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom essentials to the very last day.

2. Declutter Before You Pack — Not After

There is no point packing and moving items you no longer need. Before you reach for a single box, go through every room and make three piles: keep, donate and dispose. Moving is the perfect opportunity to lighten the load. Fewer items means fewer boxes, less van space and a lower removal cost.

3. Use the Right Boxes for the Right Items

Small boxes are for heavy items like books, crockery and files. Large boxes are for light, bulky items like bedding, cushions and clothing. Never overfill a box to the point where the base bows — this causes damage and injuries. If you can't lift a box comfortably with both hands, it's too heavy.

4. Wrap Every Fragile Item Individually

Use bubble wrap, packing paper or even clothing and towels to wrap every fragile item individually. Place heavier items at the bottom of the box and lighter, more fragile items on top. Always fill gaps in boxes with packing paper or soft materials to prevent items shifting in transit.

5. Label Every Box — On the Side, Not the Top

Write the contents AND the destination room on every box. Label on the side of the box, not the lid — when boxes are stacked you cannot see the top. Use red marker or stickers for FRAGILE boxes so your removal team knows to handle them with extra care.

6. Pack a "First Night" Box

Pack a separate, clearly labelled box or bag with everything you will need for the first night in your new home — phone charger, kettle, tea and coffee, a change of clothes, toiletries, medications, bedding and your children's essentials. This box should travel in your car, not the van, and be the first thing you unpack.

7. Take Photos of Electronics Before Disconnecting

Before you unplug your TV, router, gaming systems or home office setup, take a clear photo of all the cables from behind. This makes reconnecting everything in your new home much faster and far less frustrating.

8. Keep Important Documents With You at All Times

Passports, birth certificates, mortgage documents, insurance policies and financial records should never go in the removal van. Keep them with you in a dedicated folder throughout the move. The same applies to jewellery, medications and items of irreplaceable sentimental value.

9. Disassemble Furniture in Advance

Flat-pack furniture, bed frames and large shelving units should be disassembled before moving day wherever possible. Keep all screws, bolts and fixings in clearly labelled zip-lock bags and tape them to the furniture they belong to. This saves significant time on both packing and reassembly.

10. Communicate Clearly With Your Removal Team

On moving day, walk your removal team through the property and point out anything that needs special attention — fragile items, items that cannot be tilted, things that must go last. At your new home, put printed signs on each door so the team knows exactly which room is which. The more information you give them, the smoother your move will be.

Moving Advice

How to Choose the Right Removals Company in Surrey

Choosing a removal company is one of the most important decisions you will make when moving home. Your belongings — often your most valuable possessions — will be in their hands for the entire day. Here is what to look for.

1. Always Check Their Reviews

The most reliable indicator of a good removal company is consistent, genuine customer reviews. Look for companies with a strong rating on Google (4.7 stars or above) and a significant number of reviews — not just a handful. Read the reviews carefully. Look for recurring themes: are they punctual? Do they take care of fragile items? Are they friendly and professional?

2. Verify They Are Fully Insured

Any reputable removal company should carry full liability insurance. This protects your belongings in the event of damage or loss during the move. Always ask for confirmation of insurance before booking. If a company cannot provide this, walk away — no matter how cheap their quote is.

3. Get at Least Three Quotes

Removal costs vary significantly between companies. Get quotes from at least three different companies and make sure each quote is based on the same information — the same volume of items, same move date, same access conditions. Be wary of quotes that seem unusually low — they often come with hidden charges that appear on moving day.

4. Watch Out for Hidden Charges

Ask specifically about additional charges for stairs, long carry distances, parking restrictions, waiting time and packing materials. A trustworthy company will be upfront about everything. If a company is evasive about costs or gives you a vague verbal estimate, request everything in writing before committing.

5. Ask About Experience With Your Type of Move

Moving a two-bedroom flat is very different from moving a six-bedroom house or relocating a business. Ask the company how much experience they have with moves similar to yours. If you have specialist items — a grand piano, antiques, artwork or wine collections — make sure the company has specific experience handling them.

6. Check Their Equipment and Vehicles

A professional removal company should have well-maintained vehicles of the right size for your move, along with proper equipment — trolleys, furniture blankets, straps, packing materials and protective floor coverings. Ask whether they wrap furniture before loading — this is standard practice for any quality company.

7. Look for a Personal, Responsive Service

Pay attention to how a company communicates with you from the very first contact. Do they respond promptly? Are they happy to answer your questions? Do they take time to understand your specific needs? A company that is difficult to deal with before the move will be even more difficult on the day.

8. Avoid Cash-Only Companies

Reputable removal companies will always provide a written quote and accept card or bank transfer. Cash-only businesses are difficult to hold accountable if something goes wrong. Always pay by a method that gives you a paper trail.

ATA Transport and Removals ticks every box — 87+ five-star Google reviews, fully insured, transparent pricing and a genuinely personal service from a family-run team who cares.

European Moves

Your Complete Guide to European Removals from the UK

Moving from the UK to Europe is a significant undertaking, but with the right planning and a trusted removal company by your side, it can be a smooth and exciting new chapter. Here is everything you need to know.

Understanding the Post-Brexit Landscape

Since Brexit, moving goods from the UK to EU countries involves customs procedures that did not previously exist. You will need to complete a customs declaration for your personal belongings. In most cases, personal effects moved as part of a change of residence are exempt from import duties and VAT — but the paperwork must be completed correctly. Your removal company should be experienced in managing these requirements.

Create a Detailed Inventory

For any international move, you will need a comprehensive, itemised inventory of everything being transported. This is required for customs clearance and insurance purposes. Your removal team should assist you in creating this. Be specific — list items by category, approximate value and quantity. Keep a copy for yourself and provide one to your removal company.

Understand What Cannot Be Transported

Certain items cannot be transported internationally, including plants, perishable food, firearms, flammable liquids and certain medications. Check the specific import regulations for your destination country well in advance. Some countries have restrictions on items that are perfectly legal in the UK.

Plan Your Route and Timeline Carefully

European removals typically take 2–5 days depending on destination. Factor in driving regulations — EU countries limit how many hours a driver can be behind the wheel each day. Your removal company will plan the route, ferry crossings or Channel Tunnel booking, and overnight stops. Make sure you have a clear timeline agreed in writing.

Sort Out Your Documentation Early

You will need your passport, proof of change of residence (such as a rental agreement or purchase contract for your new home), and a Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief form if you wish to import goods duty-free. Some countries require additional documentation — your removal company should advise you on the specific requirements for your destination.

Consider Insurance Carefully

Standard removal insurance may not provide full coverage for international moves. Ask your removal company about specific international transit insurance. Make sure you understand exactly what is covered, what the claims process is and what documentation you need in the event of damage or loss.

Communicate With Your Removal Team Throughout

International moves have more variables than local ones — border crossings, customs checks, ferry schedules and delivery windows at the destination. Choose a removal company that keeps you informed at every stage and has a reliable point of contact you can reach throughout the journey.

Plan Your Arrival

Make sure your new home will be accessible for a large removal vehicle on delivery day. In many European countries, parking a large van on a residential street requires prior permission from the local authority. Your removal company should advise you on this — but it is also worth checking with your new building management or local council in advance.

ATA Transport and Removals has personal experience of European routes — including through France, Italy and beyond. We handle all the logistics so you can focus on your exciting new chapter.

Your Ultimate Moving Day Checklist

Moving day is finally here. With so much happening at once, it is easy to overlook something important. Use this comprehensive checklist to make sure nothing gets left behind — literally or figuratively.

The Night Before — Get Organised

Pack your "first night" bag with essentials for the first 24 hours. Confirm your removal team's arrival time. Charge all phones and devices. Prepare payment if required. Set your alarm — moving days start early. Make sure all boxes are sealed and labelled. Disassemble any remaining furniture. Prepare a clear parking space for the removal van if possible.

Morning of the Move — Before the Team Arrives

Do a final walkthrough of every room, including loft, garage and shed. Check inside all cupboards, wardrobes and drawers — especially those in children's rooms. Check under beds, behind doors and in the garden. Defrost and empty the fridge and freezer if it is being moved. Disconnect all appliances. Keep your kettle, mugs and some drinks accessible for the team.

When the Removal Team Arrives

Walk the team through the property and explain anything that needs special handling. Show them the route to the van — clear any obstacles from hallways and doorways. Point out fragile items and items that must stay upright. Let them know which items are going into storage rather than the new home. Stay available to answer questions throughout the day.

At Your New Home

Arrive before the van if possible to unlock and prepare. Put up room labels on every door so the team can place boxes in the right rooms first time. Show the team where to park and the best route into the property. Walk the team through the new home before unloading begins. Check each room as boxes are delivered.

After the Van Leaves — Old Property

Do a complete final walkthrough of every single room. Check loft, cellar, garage and outbuildings. Take meter readings (gas, electricity, water) and photograph them. Return all keys as agreed. Check all windows are closed and locked. Turn off all lights, heating and any remaining appliances.

After the Van Leaves — New Property

Take meter readings at your new home immediately. Test that all lights, heating, water and appliances work. Check that internet and phone connections are active. Change the locks if you have not done so already — you do not know how many sets of keys are in circulation. Introduce yourself to your new neighbours.

In the Following Days — Important Admin

Update your address with: Royal Mail redirection service, DVLA (driving licence and vehicle registration), HMRC, your bank and financial institutions, your GP and dentist, schools and childcare providers, your employer, utility companies, insurance providers, your local council (for council tax), and any subscriptions or online accounts.

Moving is our speciality — let ATA Transport and Removals take care of the heavy lifting while you focus on everything else. Call Alessandro today for a free, no-obligation quote.

How Far in Advance Should You Book a Removal Company?

Timing your removal booking correctly can make the difference between a smooth, affordable move and a last-minute scramble. Here is everything you need to know about when to book — and why it matters.

The Golden Rule — Book as Early as Possible

The removal industry has peak periods when quality companies are booked up weeks or even months in advance. As a general rule, aim to book your removal company at least 4–8 weeks before your move date. For moves during peak periods, 8–12 weeks in advance is not excessive. The earlier you book, the more choice you have — and often the better the price.

When Is the Removal Industry at Its Busiest?

The busiest periods for removal companies are: the end of the month (when most property completions happen), Friday afternoons (the most popular completion day), school summer holidays (June to September), and bank holiday weekends. If your move falls during any of these times, booking early is essential.

What Happens If You Leave It Too Late?

Leaving your booking too late means the best companies are already taken. You may be left choosing between an unknown company with limited reviews or paying a significant premium for last-minute availability. Quality, reliability and value are all compromised when you rush a removal booking.

What to Do If Your Move Date Is Uncertain

Many moves depend on a chain of property transactions completing simultaneously — which can cause dates to shift. Speak to your removal company about this early. A good company will be flexible and work with you if dates change. Avoid companies that demand a non-refundable deposit without any flexibility for date changes.

How to Secure Your Preferred Date

Once you have received quotes and chosen your removal company, secure your preferred date with a deposit as quickly as possible — even if your exchange of contracts has not yet happened. Most reputable companies will hold your date with a reasonable deposit and a clear cancellation or date-change policy.

What to Do if Your Date Changes at the Last Minute

Property chains can collapse or completion dates can shift even at the last minute. Contact your removal company immediately — the sooner they know, the more they can do to accommodate you. Ask about their date-change policy before booking so you are not caught out. A family-run company like ATA is often more flexible than a large national firm.

Can You Book Too Early?

In theory, yes — if you book very far in advance and the date changes significantly, it can cause complications. But in practice, the risks of booking too early are far smaller than the risks of leaving it too late. Most companies will work with you on reasonable date changes. Book when you have a confirmed or likely date and communicate openly with your removal team throughout.

Costs & Budgeting

How Much Do Removals Cost in Surrey? A 2025 Guide

One of the first questions people ask when planning a move is: how much will it cost? Removal costs in Surrey vary depending on a number of factors. This guide breaks it all down so you can budget with confidence.

What Factors Affect the Cost of a Removal?

The main factors that influence your removal cost are: the volume of items being moved (how much fits in the van), the distance between your old and new home, access at both properties (stairs, lifts, parking, long carries), the time of year and day of the week, whether you need packing services, and whether any specialist items need to be moved (pianos, antiques, artwork).

Average Removal Costs in Surrey — 2025

As a rough guide for moves within Surrey and the surrounding area: a studio or one-bedroom flat typically costs £300–£500; a two to three bedroom home is usually £500–£900; a four to five bedroom home is typically £900–£1,500+. These figures are for local moves with a standard access and no packing service. European moves will be priced separately based on distance and destination.

Man and Van vs Full Removal Service — What Is the Difference?

A man and van service is ideal for smaller moves — a studio flat, a few items of furniture, a student move or a single room. It is more affordable than a full removal service and works well for straightforward, accessible moves. A full removal service includes a larger team, a bigger vehicle, and usually covers disassembly and reassembly of furniture. For larger homes or complex moves, the full service is almost always worth the extra cost.

What Is Included in a Standard Removal Quote?

A standard removal quote typically includes: the removal team's time and labour, the van (sized appropriately for your move), fuel, transit insurance for your goods, and all loading and unloading. It does not usually include packing materials, packing service, disassembly and reassembly of furniture, or storage. Always confirm exactly what is and is not included before you sign anything.

How to Keep Your Removal Costs Down

Be flexible with your move date if possible — midweek moves are often cheaper than Fridays. Declutter before you move to reduce the volume of items. Do some or all of the packing yourself. Have everything ready to load when the team arrives — time wasted on moving day costs money. Ask about any discounts for flexible timing or off-peak moves.

Why the Cheapest Quote Is Not Always the Best Value

It is tempting to go with the lowest quote, but the removal industry has its share of companies that underquote to win the job and then add charges on the day — or worse, handle your belongings carelessly. A slightly higher quote from a company with genuine five-star reviews and full insurance is almost always better value than a cheap quote from an unknown company.

How to Get an Accurate Quote

The most accurate quotes are based on a proper assessment of your belongings — either in person or via a video call. Be honest about what you have, including items in the loft, garage and garden. Mention any access challenges at either property. The more information you provide, the more accurate your quote will be — and the less likely you are to face unexpected charges on moving day.

At ATA Transport and Removals, our quotes are always transparent, competitive and based on a thorough understanding of your specific move. No hidden fees, no nasty surprises. Call Alessandro today.
